PLA print cost calculator
PLA is the cheapest and most forgiving filament, so material is rarely the biggest cost. Time, labor and failed prints usually matter more.

Worked example
120 g at $20.00 per 1000 g, 5 h at 120 W and $0.16/kWh, a $600.00 machine over 5,000 h, 10 min of hands-on time at $20.00/h and a 4% failed-print buffer works out to about $6.70 per good print: material $2.40, electricity $0.10, printer wear $0.60, labor $3.33, failures $0.27.
What drives the cost
- At $20/kg, every 100 g of PLA costs about $2.00.
- Low bed temperature keeps the electricity cost low, usually only a few cents an hour.
- Failure rates are typically low once a printer is tuned, so a 3–5% buffer is common.
Common uses
- Decor, planters and figurines
- Desk organizers and holders
- Prototypes and cosplay props
Watch out for
- It softens around 55–60 °C, so avoid products for hot cars or dishwashers.
- Its UV resistance is limited for outdoor items.
