Worked example
120 g at $23.00 per 1000 g, 5 h at 125 W and $0.16/kWh, a $600.00 machine over 5,000 h, 10 min of hands-on time at $20.00/h and a 4% failed-print buffer works out to about $7.08 per good print: material $2.76, electricity $0.10, printer wear $0.60, labor $3.33, failures $0.28.
What drives the cost
- The premium over PLA is usually $2–5 per kg, which is cents per part.
- Slightly hotter nozzle temperatures mean barely any change in power draw.
Common uses
- Clips, brackets and hooks
- Toys and fidget items
- Parts that need to survive a drop
Watch out for
- Formulations vary by brand, so re-check temperatures each time you switch spools.
