ABS is cheap per kilogram but needs an enclosure and a hot bed. Warping makes failed prints the line to watch.

An estimate from the numbers you enter. It leaves out packaging, shipping, marketplace fees and tax.
Worked example
120 g at $20.00 per 1000 g, 6 h at 220 W and $0.16/kWh, a $600.00 machine over 5,000 h, 10 min of hands-on time at $20.00/h and a 10% failed-print buffer works out to about $7.41 per good print: material $2.40, electricity $0.21, printer wear $0.72, labor $3.33, failures $0.74.
What drives the cost
- Its low density means more parts per spool than PLA.
- A 100 °C+ bed and a warm enclosure noticeably raise average power draw.
- Warping and cracking can push failure rates to 8–15% without an enclosure.
Common uses
- Automotive interior parts
- Heat-tolerant enclosures and housings
- Parts that will be acetone-smoothed
Watch out for
- It gives off fumes while printing, so it needs ventilation or filtration.
