ABS vs ASA: cost compared
ASA prints like ABS but costs more per kg. Pay the premium only when parts live in sunlight.
| ABS | ASA | |
|---|---|---|
| Cost per 100 cm³ of solid part | $2.08 | $3.00 |
| Example print (preset) | $7.41 | $8.38 |
| Typical spool price | $16–25 per kg | $22–35 per kg |
| Density | about 1.04 g/cm³ | about 1.07 g/cm³ |
| Nozzle / bed | 230–260 °C / 95–110 °C | 240–260 °C / 90–110 °C |
| Enclosure | Recommended | Recommended |

Choose ABS for
Indoor heat-resistant parts at lower cost
- It gives off fumes while printing, so it needs ventilation or filtration.
Choose ASA for
Outdoor and UV-exposed parts
- Ventilation is needed. Warping makes large flat parts difficult.
What changes the comparison
- Its low density means more parts per spool than PLA.
- A 100 °C+ bed and a warm enclosure noticeably raise average power draw.
- It costs more than ABS but lasts longer outdoors, which can support a higher price.
- Power use is similar to ABS.
