PLA vs TPU (flexible): cost compared

TPU costs much more per kg and often prints at half speed or less. Use it only where flexibility is the product.

Choose PLA for

Rigid parts

  • It softens around 55–60 °C, so avoid products for hot cars or dishwashers.
  • Its UV resistance is limited for outdoor items.

Choose TPU (flexible) for

Phone cases, gaskets, grips, wearables

  • Bowden setups jam easily. Moisture causes stringing.

What changes the comparison

  • At $20/kg, every 100 g of PLA costs about $2.00.
  • Low bed temperature keeps the electricity cost low, usually only a few cents an hour.
  • Slow speeds can double print time compared with the same part in PLA.
  • The bed runs cool, so electricity per hour is low but you pay for more hours.
