Worked example
120 g at $28.00 per 1000 g, 5 h at 120 W and $0.16/kWh, a $600.00 machine over 5,000 h, 20 min of hands-on time at $20.00/h and a 6% failed-print buffer works out to about $11.41 per good print: material $3.36, electricity $0.10, printer wear $0.60, labor $6.67, failures $0.68.
What drives the cost
- A larger nozzle prints faster, which can offset the higher spool price.
- Sanding and staining add hands-on minutes. Count them in labor.
Common uses
- Rustic decor
- Plant pots and boxes
- Gifts and keepsakes
Watch out for
- Clogs in 0.4 mm nozzles mean the failure buffer matters.
