Nylon print cost calculator

Nylon is strong, slippery and wear-resistant, but it absorbs moisture fast. Drying time and failed prints add real cost.

Worked example

120 g at $55.00 per 1000 g, 7 h at 200 W and $0.16/kWh, a $600.00 machine over 5,000 h, 10 min of hands-on time at $20.00/h and a 10% failed-print buffer works out to about $12.22 per good print: material $6.60, electricity $0.22, printer wear $0.84, labor $3.33, failures $1.22.

What drives the cost

  • Running a filament dryer for 4–8 hours adds about 50–100 W during that time. Add it to the print hours if you want it counted.
  • A failure rate of 8–12% is common while you dial it in.

Common uses

  • Gears, hinges and bushings
  • Tool holders
  • Functional mechanical parts

Watch out for

  • It absorbs moisture within hours, so store it sealed.
