How to price 3D printed lamps and lamp shades

Lamps combine a print with electrical parts. The hardware and the safety responsibility make them a higher-value, higher-care product.

Typical material use

100–400 g

Typical print time

5–16 h

Common materials

PLA or PETG (keep it away from hot bulbs)

Hands-on time

15–30 min of wiring and assembly

Step 1: work out your real cost

The calculator is preset for a typical lamps and lamp shade. Change it to your slicer's numbers.

Estimated cost per print

$14.50

Material
$4.00
Electricity
$0.24
Printer wear
$1.20
Labor
$8.33
Failed-print buffer
$0.72

An estimate from the numbers you enter. It leaves out packaging, shipping, marketplace fees and tax.

What drives the cost

  • The LED kit, cord and socket can exceed the filament cost.
  • Translucent and specialty filaments cost more.
  • Testing every unit adds labor.

Costs the calculator leaves out

  • Certified LED kits
  • Cords and plugs
  • Protective packaging

Step 2: turn cost into a price

A simple method: price = (cost + fixed fees) ÷ (1 − fee % − margin %). Using the example print cost of $14.50, plus about $1.50 for extras, a 10% marketplace and payment fee and a $0.45 fixed fee gives:

Target marginPrice that covers it
10%$20.56
20%$23.50
30%$27.42

Illustrative only. Use your marketplace's current fee schedule, shipping and tax. A price that covers cost is not a promise anyone will buy at it, so check demand and competing listings.

Pricing tips for lamps and lamp shades

  • Price the shade only and the complete lamp as separate products.
  • Use LED bulbs only and say so, because heat matters with PLA.
  • Check the electrical-product rules for where you sell.
License check: If you print someone else's design, confirm its license allows commercial use. Many free models are personal-use only. See the license guides.
