Same asking price, different fee burden: a maker's Amazon costing check
By MeshNomics Research · Published · 6 min read

The finding: price is an incomplete shortlist
In MeshNomics' sampled Amazon records, phone stands have a median asking price of $22 and planters have a median asking price of $22. Their median estimated referral-plus-fulfillment shares differ: 33% for phone stands and 50% for planters.
That contrast is useful before committing printer capacity. A price-led shortlist can hide materially different fulfillment assumptions. It does not establish which product to make: category composition, package dimensions, fee-estimate vintage and a particular design's production cost remain unresolved.
Our recommendation is to use this comparison as a trigger for a product-specific costing check. The category estimate should identify what to inspect; it should not become the fee line in a production budget.
The comparison, with its denominators
This is a selected contrast from the existing Amazon fee brief, read November 6, 2026. The complete eligible sample contains 47,226 priced product records across 61 concepts. The phone-stand and planter records shown here span September 19, 2026 to November 6, 2026. These dates describe stored marketplace observations, not a period of measured merchant charges.
| Sampled concept | Products with price and fee estimates | Median asking price | Median estimated referral-plus-fulfillment share | Share with estimated fees reaching 40% of asking price |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Phone stand | 1,068 | $22 | 33% | 36% |
| Planter / plant pot | 898 | $22 | 50% | 84% |
Dollar amounts and shares use the publication formatter's rounded display. The last column uses a screening threshold, not a pass/fail rule for a business. The fee-share column is the median of product-level ratios. It is not the ratio obtained by combining the median price with separately calculated median fee components. Those medians need not belong to the same product.
Prices are listed offers. Fees are research estimates assuming Amazon fulfillment. Neither column is a settled seller-account amount, and the comparison makes no claim about demand, sales, profitability or manufacturing method.
What the contrast cannot explain
The sample groups products that could be candidates for desktop manufacturing; it does not identify a cohort of confirmed printed products. It also does not match planters and stands on dimensions, weight, material, brand or seller. The selected comparison illustrates an accounting question, not a controlled test of category effects.
The newest observation does not make every record current. Older product observations remain in the sample, and the brief does not provide a separate timestamp for each underlying fee estimate or establish whether every seasonal adjustment is included. That is why this report does not describe the table as today's exact Amazon fee schedule. Missing price or required fee inputs are excluded rather than replaced with zero; the brief does not return a count of all excluded records.
Storage, advertising, returns, inbound shipping and tax are outside the estimated fee share. Manufacturing, labor, packaging and capacity costs must also be added before making a production decision.
A reusable product-costing worksheet
Use the following fields for the actual design you are considering. Keep account details and order references private.
| Field | What to record | Decision it supports |
|---|---|---|
| Comparable offer | Product, marketplace, date, pack quantity and intended use | Is this a relevant comparator? |
| Packed design | Measured shipping dimensions and weight | Which fulfillment assumptions need checking? |
| Current fee estimate | Program, applicable schedule, estimate date and included charges | Is the fee line sufficiently current and specific? |
| Production inputs | Measured material, machine occupancy, labor and packaging | Is the making cost grounded in an actual process? |
| Exceptions | Missing costs, returns assumptions and unresolved discrepancies | What must be resolved before stocking inventory? |
| Later reconciliation | Actual charged line and explanation of any difference | Which estimate needs correction? |
Amazon's estimate guide, read November 6, 2026, describes comparing fulfillment options using product dimensions, weight, category, price and shipping inputs. It also explains where sellers can obtain Fee Preview. Treat that account-specific estimate as another dated piece of evidence, then reconcile it with an actual charge when available.
For an illustrative workflow, a maker evaluating a planter would measure the packaged prototype, check the applicable program and build a contribution scenario using actual production inputs. A phone-stand category median would not substitute for those measurements. This is a proposed workflow, not a measured seller outcome.
Use the MeshNomics cost calculator to organize the production scenario. If the estimate is missing or its scope is unclear, keep the candidate in research. Do not infer an attractive business from the lower sampled fee share alone.
Scope, sources and reuse
This original analysis uses a complete read of the existing Amazon fee brief and a deliberately selected same-price contrast. The method includes USD-priced records with required fee estimates and applies the desk's existing group-size and disclosure gates. Records without a currency label are treated as USD by the existing query; currency completeness is therefore a limitation. The sample is purposive, not a representative survey, and no significance, causal or future-performance claim is made. November 6, 2026 is the retrieval date; the observation windows are preserved below.
The evidence notes below retain the cited values, units and denominators. Cite MeshNomics Research, this article's title, November 6, 2026 and its canonical URL. When reusing the comparison, retain the estimate labels, sample scope and observation dates. Attribute platform instructions to Amazon and recheck their current version. Private product records and provider details are not included in the public report.
Prepared and checked through an automated research and editorial process. No individual human review, measured time savings or commercial result is claimed.
How we measured this
Every figure in this article comes from MeshNomics' research data. Groups of fewer than 10 are left out, and counts of 1 to 4 are not printed; a count of zero is.

What these numbers are, and are not
- Listed offer price. Prices are what listings asked when we recorded them, in US dollars. They are offers, not the price any buyer paid, and Etsy and Amazon listings are different populations compared side by side, never merged.
- Estimated marketplace fee. Fees are per-product estimates of Amazon's referral fee and its fulfilment (pick and pack) fee, worked out by a research tool from Amazon's published fee rules and each product's category and package size, and set against the asking price we recorded. They assume Amazon fulfils the order, and they leave out storage, advertising, returns, inbound shipping and tax. Your own fees depend on your program, size tier and the fee schedule in force.
- Count of what we recorded. Counts are of the listings, products or designs in our research sample. They describe the sample, not the whole market.
These are descriptive figures about the market as we sampled it, read on 2026-11-06 (evidence set f2c596c9217711fb). They are not forecasts, and not advice that any product will sell. Test demand, costs and licences for your own product before you commit printer time.
