Can you sell 3D prints of MakerWorld Standard designs?
Selling prints: no, not without separate permission
The Standard Digital File License is personal-use only. Selling prints needs that designer's Commercial License Membership.
A plain-English summary of the MakerWorld Standard Digital File License, not legal advice. Read the licence text on the model page.
MakerWorld's own licence, required for models in its Exclusive program. It forbids selling or distributing digital or printed versions. Seen on: MakerWorld.
What MakerWorld Standard lets you do, requires and forbids
Lets you
- Printing for your own personal use
Requires
- A separate commercial licence (for example the designer's Commercial License Membership) before any commercial use
Forbids
- Selling, renting or distributing digital or 3D-printed versions
- Charging money or collecting fees for use of the object without permission
Remixes and changes
Not allowed to be shared or sold.
What the licence doesn't cover
- Characters, logos and brands. A designer can only license rights they own.
- Marketplace rules. Etsy requires items made with 3D printers, lasers or CNC machines to be based on your own original design, even with a commercial licence. eBay, your own store and local markets have their own rules.
- Product safety. A licence says nothing about whether a part is food-safe, child-safe or load-bearing.
Questions
- What is a Commercial License Membership?
- A monthly membership a MakerWorld designer can sell that grants commercial rights to sell prints of their models. Each designer writes their own terms.
- Does the membership cover every designer?
- No. It covers only that designer's models, on the terms they wrote.
