Selling 3D printed planters: what to check before you print a batch
Whether planters are worth printing for sale comes down to three checks: interest in the designs, your cost per print, and the licence of the file you print. Below: what MeshNomics' published designs show about interest, a worked cost estimate you can edit, the licence checks, and what none of these can tell you.
1. Model interest
Of the 50 highest-scored designs MeshNomics publishes, 1 are planters, and 1 of those have a recorded commercial-use flag. The published slice does not include a source-read timestamp. This flag does not clear third-party copyright, trademark or other rights.
This page needs at least 5 matching designs with a recorded commercial-use flag and an indexable niche. It does not meet both checks, so it is not offered to search engines yet.
| Design | Source | Licence | Downloads (model interest) | Score |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Baby Groot Air Plant Planter by JuliaTruchsess | Thingiverse | CC BY | 162,257 | 67 |
Downloads are the cumulative count on the source platform when MeshNomics last read it. They are model interest, not sales, and not a rate: a design may have earned most of them years ago. The score is a research aid, not a sales forecast (how scores work).
2. Your cost per print
With illustrative inputs for a typical piece (80–300 g, 3–10 h, pla indoors; petg or asa outdoors), a print costs about $7.08 before packaging, marketplace fees and shipping. That is an estimate from the inputs below, not MeshNomics data. Replace them with your slicer's numbers.

3. The licence of the file you print
- Check the licence on each design's own page before you sell a print. An unknown licence is not permission, and many popular models are for non-commercial use only. See the licence guides.
- A commercial-use licence can require attribution and other conditions. It does not establish that the uploader owns all rights to characters, logos or other material in the design.
- Etsy only allows 3D printed items based on your own original designs. For any sales channel, check its rules and the rights to the specific design.
Checks specific to planters
- Outdoor planters need UV-stable material such as ASA or PETG; PLA softens in sun.
- Say whether a planter has drainage, and whether it is watertight.
What this page cannot tell you
Whether buyers will pay your price. Download counts measure interest in a design file, not purchases of a printed product. Compare marketplace listings, reviews and asking prices before you print a batch, and remember an asking price is not proof of what anyone paid.
Questions
- Can I sell 3D printed planters made from free models?
- Check the design's licence and all relevant rights before selling. Of the designs in MeshNomics' published top-scored set, 1 are planters and 1 of those have a recorded commercial-use flag. A commercial-use flag does not clear third-party copyright, trademark or other rights. Check the licence on each design's own page: an unknown licence is not permission. On Etsy, 3D printed items must be based on your own original design.
- How much does it cost to 3D print planters?
- With the illustrative inputs on this page, about $7.08 per print before packaging, marketplace fees and shipping. Your slicer's numbers will differ, and the calculator takes them.
- Do downloads show that planters sell?
- No. Downloads are model interest on the source platform, counted over the design's whole life. They are not sales and not a rate. Marketplace listings, reviews and purchase signals are separate evidence.
